Archer

Developed by Charles Faram and released in 2013, Archer was bred as part of the same modern wave as Jester®. It represents a significant shift for British hops, moving away from traditional earthy and woody spice toward a delicate, fruit-forward elegance. It offers a sophisticated bouquet dominated by stone fruits like apricot and peach, balanced by a subtle citrusy lime lift and a hint of sweet honey. Because it has very low co-humulone levels, it provides an exceptionally smooth and soft bitterness. It is the perfect choice for brewers who want to bridge the gap between classic European drinkability and modern, punchy fruit aromatics without the “dank” or heavy resin notes of US varieties.

Key Benefits

  1. Stone Fruit Dominance: Provides rare and desirable notes of apricot and peach.
  2. Refined Bitterness: Extremely low co-humulone content ensures a silky-smooth finish.
  3. Modern British Terroir: Delivers a “clean” fruity profile that is sustainable and locally grown in the UK.
  4. High Drinkability: Its subtle complexity enhances sessionable styles without being overpowering.

Applications

  1. Brewing: Ideal for Golden Ales, Blonde Ales, sessionable Pale Ales, and modern Lagers.
  2. Distilling: A premium botanical for gins seeking a soft, stone-fruit and floral citrus top note.
  3. Cider Making: Adds a delicate, velvety peach and apricot complexity to light, crisp ciders.
  4. Winemaking: Excellent for botanical infusions in white vermouths or aromatic aperitifs.

Typical Usage

  1. Aroma/Flavour: Traditionally added during the final 10–0 minutes of the boil or in the whirlpool.
  2. Dry Hopping: 2–6g per litre to fully extract the delicate peach and lime esters.
  3. Bittering: Can be used early in the boil for an ultra-smooth bitterness, though its aromatic value is its primary strength.

Technical Data

  1. Alpha Acids: 4.0% – 6.0%
  2. Beta Acids: 2.0% – 3.0%
  3. Total Oil: 0.4 – 0.8 ml/100g
  4. Co-Humulone: 20% – 25% of alpha acids
  5. Myrcene: 30% – 35% of total oil
  6. Humulene: 25% – 30% of total oil

Storage and Handling

Store in cold, dry conditions at temperatures between -1°C and 5°C. Archer has good storage stability, but its delicate fruit oils are volatile. Always keep in original vacuum-sealed, oxygen-barrier packaging to protect the apricot and peach characteristics from oxidation.

Summary

Archer is the definitive “stone fruit” hop of the UK; providing a modern, elegant, and incredibly smooth aromatic profile that breathes new life into traditional and contemporary session styles.
