Citra is a versatile hop with an incomparable citrusy profile. It was publicly released in 2008 even though it was bred by hop breeder Gene Probasco in the 1990s. It’s arguably one of the most popular and iconic hops in the market – without it, pale ales, IPAs and NEIPAs may not have taken off the way they did! Citra® is the delicious foundation and star of many fruit-flavoured beers.
Citra, as the name implies, has a strong citrusy profile. This is largely credited to its very high myrcene content. It has an extraordinary flavor profile of grapefruit, lime and tropical fruits but despite its high alphas, brewers often warn against its use for bittering, which is considered by some to be harsh and undesirable.
