Endeavour is a complex dual-purpose hop variety originating from the United Kingdom. With an alpha acid range of 8.0% – 10.5%, it is used for both bittering and aroma, offering a sophisticated “hedgerow” profile of blackcurrant, loganberry, and subtle spice.

Endeavour

Released in 2012 by the Wye Hops breeding programme, Endeavour is a cross between the high-alpha variety Cascade and a late-maturing English hop. It was designed to provide a more robust and disease-resistant alternative to traditional English aroma hops while incorporating a hint of “New World” fruitiness. The result is a hop that captures the classic earthy soul of British soil but layers it with intense dark fruit notes. Brewers often describe its aroma as a mix of summer berries, grapefruit, and a distinct herbal spiciness. Because of its relatively high alpha acid content and smooth bittering characteristics, it is exceptionally versatile, performing just as well in the early boil as it does in the whirlpool or dry hop.

Key Benefits

  1. Rich Fruit Profile: Delivers a distinctive “British berry” character dominated by blackcurrant and plum.
  2. Balanced Dual-Purpose: Provides high bittering potential without sacrificing a refined aromatic finish.
  3. Modern British Terroir: Offers a more intense fruit profile than traditional Goldings or Fuggles while remaining sustainably grown in the UK.
  4. Excellent Depth: Pairs beautifully with complex malt bills, adding a fruity lift to darker beers.

Applications

  1. Brewing: Ideal for English Pale Ales, Best Bitters, Porters, Stouts, and modern Golden Ales.
  2. Distilling: A great choice for botanical spirits seeking a dark fruit and spicy top note.
  3. Cider Making: Adds a sophisticated, “hedgerow berry” complexity to traditional or barrel-aged ciders.
  4. Winemaking: Suitable for botanical infusions in red vermouths to impart a fruity and spicy lift.

Typical Usage

  1. Bittering: Added at the start of the boil (60 mins) for a smooth and reliable bitterness.
  2. Aroma/Flavour: Added during the final 15–0 minutes of the boil or in the whirlpool to capture the berry esters.
  3. Dry Hopping: 2–6g per litre to fully express the “wild” berry and subtle citrus aromatics.

Technical Data

  1. Alpha Acids: 8.0% – 10.5%
  2. Beta Acids: 4.0% – 6.0%
  3. Total Oil: 1.0 – 1.7 ml/100g
  4. Co-Humulone: 20% – 25% of alpha acids
  5. Myrcene: 25% – 35% of total oil
  6. Humulene: 20% – 30% of total oil

Storage and Handling

Store in cold, dry conditions at temperatures between -1°C and 5°C. Endeavour has very good storage stability, typically retaining 75%–80% of its alpha acids after six months at 20°C. To maintain its unique dark fruit profile, always keep in original vacuum-sealed, oxygen-barrier packaging.

Summary

Endeavour is the ultimate “modern classic” of the English hop world, providing a robust bittering performance and a sophisticated berry-forward aroma that bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary craft styles.
