Warrior® is a high-alpha bittering hop originating from the United States. With a typical alpha acid range of 14.5% – 17.0%, it is a premier bittering hop prized for its exceptionally clean, neutral bitterness and subtle notes of mild citrus and spice.

Warrior

Developed by the Hop Breeding Company (HBC) and released in 2001, Warrior® was bred to be the ultimate “clean” bittering agent for the craft brewing industry. While many high-alpha hops of that era carried heavy “dank” or resinous characteristics, Warrior® was selected for its low co-humulone content, which results in a smooth, crisp bitterness that does not linger or “bite.” It serves as a transparent foundation, allowing the aromatics of late-addition hops to shine without interference. When used in larger quantities or late in the boil, it can impart a mild, pleasant bouquet of grapefruit, pine, and earthy herbs, but it is most valued as a reliable, high-efficiency workhorse for establishing the IBU backbone of a wide range of styles.

Key Benefits

  1. Ultra-Clean Bitterness: One of the lowest co-humulone levels for a high-alpha hop, providing a smooth, high-quality finish.
  2. Neutral Baseline: Its mild aromatic impact makes it the perfect “blank canvas” for hop-forward recipes.
  3. Exceptional Efficiency: Very high alpha acid content allows for a significantly smaller hop bill to reach bitterness targets.
  4. Process Stability: Known for consistent performance and excellent storage, making it a staple in professional brewhouses.

Applications

  1. Brewing: The foundational bittering hop for West Coast IPAs, Double IPAs, Imperial Stouts, and crisp Lagers.
  2. Distilling: A reliable choice for building the bittering structure of hop-infused spirits without overcomplicating the botanical profile.
  3. Cider Making: Used to provide a sharp, clean bittering counter-balance to sweet or tannic apple blends.
  4. Winemaking: Suitable for botanical vermouth bases requiring a structural bittering lift that won’t clash with delicate herbs.

Typical Usage

  1. Bittering: Added at the start of the boil (60 mins) to provide a powerful and exceptionally smooth bitterness.
  2. Whirlpool: Occasionally used to provide a “clean” resinous backbone in high-gravity styles.
  3. Dry Hopping: Rarely used for dry hopping due to its subtle aromatic profile, though it can add a mild “green” pine note.

Technical Data

  1. Alpha Acids: 14.5% – 17.0%
  2. Beta Acids: 4.3% – 5.3%
  3. Total Oil: 1.0 – 2.0 ml/100g
  4. Co-Humulone: 22% – 26% of alpha acids
  5. Myrcene: 40% – 50% of total oil
  6. Humulene: 15% – 20% of total oil

Storage and Handling

Store in cold, dry conditions at temperatures between -1°C and 5°C. Warrior® has very good storage stability, typically retaining 75%–80% of its alpha acids after six months at 20°C. To maintain its clean bittering potential, always keep in original vacuum-sealed, oxygen-barrier packaging to prevent oxidation.

Summary

The definitive “clean” powerhouse; Warrior® provides unrivaled bittering efficiency and a smooth, neutral finish that serves as the perfect structural foundation for the most complex craft beverages.
